HARRY Arter’s hopes of featuring in next year’s World Cup finals were dashed following defeat for the Republic of Ireland by Denmark tonight.

The Cherries midfielder won his 11th cap for his adopted country as they were beaten 5-1 in the second leg of their play-off.

Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen, effectively shackled during the 0-0 draw in the first leg in Copenhagen on Saturday, plundered a stunning hat-trick in the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

He took the tie by the scruff of the neck with two superb finishes either side of half-time before lashing home a third late on.

Arter was replaced at the interval by Aiden McGeady.

Cyrus Christie’s own goal restored parity after Shane Duffy’s header had given the Irish an early lead with Nicklas Bendtner converting a last-minute penalty.

Meanwhile, Cherries midfielder Lewis Cook was an unused substitute as England battled out a 0-0 draw with Brazil in a friendly at Wembley.

Ryan Fraser, who last week won his second cap for Scotland, could feature in Cherries’ Central League clash with Plymouth at Canford Arena tomorrow.

Nathan Ake played 90 minutes as the Netherlands banked a 3-0 friendly win over Romania in Bucharest.

Ake, utilised at left-back, helped his team keep a clean sheet with second-half goals from Memphis Depay, Ryan Babel and Luuk de Jong doing the job at the other end.

Goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale and winger Connor Mahoney could not prevent defeat for England under-20s.

The Cherries duo played 90 minutes each but England were beaten 2-1 by Germany in an Elite League clash in Zwickau.

Newport loan ace Joe Quigley was an unused substitute for Republic of Ireland under-21s in their 2-1 loss to Norway in a European Championship qualifier.

Lys Mousset came on as a late substitute as France under-21s earned a 3-1 win over Slovenia in another European qualifier on Monday.
