BOSS Matty Holmes praised the way striker Toby Holmes stuck to the task to help Wimborne Town seal a dramatic 2-1 victory at Cirencester Town in Southern League West.

The Cuthbury frontman, who had missed a second-half penalty at the Corinium Stadium, struck a late winner after Luke Burbidge had picked the pocket of goalkeeper Thom Jonkerman.

That came after a powerful strike from Billy Maybury had opened the scoring for Magpies after 20 minutes.

Ellis Dunton headed the Centurions level in the second period – five minutes after Holmes had seen his spot-kick saved.

But it was Wimborne who went on to seal the triumph thanks to the frontman’s late goal, which left his boss delighted.

Manager Matty Holmes told the Daily Echo: “For the first 25 to 30 minutes, we were excellent. It was a great goal from Billy after a lovely move – it was a brilliant finish.

“We had three good chances in that 25-minute spell where we should have finished the game but we didn’t.”

He added: “Toby was brave enough to step up and take the penalty again.

“Whether he will take any more now I don’t know because it’s the second one he has missed in a row. I think he has had enough now!

“He stepped up and the goalkeeper read him but that’s what it is all about with penalties.

“But he kept going and managed to get that winner in the last seconds of the game.

“He would have been distraught if we had only got a point and he would have missed a penalty again.

“He has been great. He works his socks off and his goal ratio has been unbelievable for us.”

Describing the winning goal, manager Holmes said: "It was very clever from Luke Burbidge. He worked really hard to chase a lost cause and the keeper then didn’t realise he was behind him.

“The keeper spun the ball out to kick it. Luke sprinted in and side-footed to Toby to tap into an empty goal.

“It was a real schoolboy error by their keeper.”

The victory, Wimborne’s seventh in the league this season, puts them ninth in Southern League West with 23 points from their opening 15 games.

And despite picking up their third away triumph of the campaign in the league, the Magpies boss feels his side still have room to improve.

“In terms of possession we weren’t great. I thought they were better than us in possession but, in terms of chances, we created a lot more than them,” he added.

“We don’t normally steal games as such. It’s wonderful that we now have that in our locker – since I have been manager I don’t remember a game where we have pinched it.”

Magpies’ next test now comes with a home clash against Mangotsfield United on Saturday.

Wimborne were supposed to visit Taunton Town on Tuesday but the fixture has been postponed due to the hosts being taken to an FA Trophy replay by Beaconsfield.
