PIRATES boss Matt Ford has opened talks with Australian star Brady Kurtz over a new deal for 2018.

A popular figure with Poole supporters, club asset Kurtz this year roared into the number one role during a hugely successful personal campaign at Wimborne Road.

The Daily Echo understands Ford has taken steps to bring back the former Somerset charger in the hope he will play a key role in the Dorset club's next SGB Premiership title bid.

Since joining Pirates on a full transfer two years ago, Kurtz has been a key part of Ford's long-term vision. And it is thought that the 21-year-old's exemplary commitment has worked in his favour regarding a team place for next year.

Kurtz again showed his considerable talent when, competing as a reserve, he defeated Maciej Janowski, Chris Holder and Antonio Lindback in the first heat of Saturday's Grand Prix in Melbourne.

The former Australian champion could line up alongside Polish ace Kacper Woryna and Puddletown-based youngster James Shanes in next year's Poole septet.

However, the likely inclusion of Woryna and Shanes depends on the points limit set at the British Speedway Promoter's Association's AGM, due to take place in a fortnight.

Meanwhile, Slovak star Martin Vaculik has revealed plans to make his debut in British racing next year.

The 26-year-old had expressed an interest in moving to Pirates ahead of the season just gone. However, that was scuppered when he qualified for the Grand Prix series.

But even though Vaculik is due to compete in next year's world championship – courtesy of a wild card – he has admitted he is also keen to race in the SGB Premiership.

In an interview with speedwaygp.com, Vaculik said: “I will race in the UK next year. I can’t tell you which club because the question is still open. But I will race in the UK next year. I am talking to teams already.”

There is likely to be considerable interest in Vaculik's services and Ford may consider a swoop for the 2013 European champion.

The Pirates chief admitted last year that he would have moved "Heaven and Earth" to get the sought-after star in his team.
