RINGWOOD'S Aaron Coombes has become the NAF Shining Star for August.

There was strong competition as all British showjumping junior academy members are eligible for nomination and it was 15-year-old Coombes's commitment and progression that led to him winning.

He was nominated by Dorset junior academy lead coach Wendy Foot who said: “Aaron has been a tremendous member of the academy since its creation three years ago.

"He recently formed a new partnership with his pony Silverlea Salsa and, after taking part in the NAF Five Star training, we decided they were ready to jump in the Dorset team.

"Aaron was a little apprehensive about letting down the team but not only did he overcome his nerves to jump clear, he then represented Dorset in the jump-off posting another awesome clear.

"Aaron's commitment to the team and the academy, as well his infectious enthusiasm, demonstrates the attributes of an outstanding young person, he is my shining star.”

After becoming a British showjumping member in 2015 and joining the Dorset academy, Coombes's riding career has come on in leaps and bounds.

He said: “I am so happy to have won this award! I started showjumping because I enjoyed the thrill and since attending the academy I have learned all being in a rhythm and jumping smooth rounds.

"The academy has also given me a great opportunity to make new friends, be a part of a team and generally have fun. I would like to thank Wendy Foot and her son Charles who have helped me improve so much, especially with my confidence at shows.”

Melissa Newman, NAF brand manager, said: “We are so pleased to hear that Aaron's commitment to the team and the academy are paying off with some terrific clears and his representing the team in Dorset.

"Being enthusiastic is a surefire way to becoming a great ambassador for any sport and Aaron is clearly demonstrating that. Well done Aaron on achieving the Shining Star!”

Coombes will kindly receive some NAF equine products to use alongside the supplements that he currently uses, including Silky Mane & Tail D-Tangler which helps him manage Silverlea Salsa’s full tail and also GastriAid.

The NAF Shining Star Award was introduced when NAF became a British Showjumping Business Partner.

The award is for members of a junior academy who have shown a great deal of commitment, progression and outstanding behaviour along with their riding ability and much more.

Riders are nominated by their lead coach and then judged and awarded by NAF to one person each month.
