BRANSGORE'S Scott Mitchell stormed to his fourth singles title of the year – before claiming he had felt "rusty".

'Scotty Dog' dropped just eight legs en route to winning the Swedish Open in Malmö on Saturday, three of which were from the quarter-finals onwards.

Opening with a 4-3 triumph against Callum Goffin, Mitchell whitewashed Pieter Fransen (4-0) and Per Knutsson (4-0) before sealing his place in the last eight courtesy of a 4-2 victory over Kyle McKinstry.

Having blazed past James Hurrell 5-1, the 47-year-old thrashed former Grand Slam of Darts champion Scott Waites by the same scoreline.

And Mitchell was in similarly uncompromising mood in the final, sweeping aside 2016 World Trophy winner Darryl Fitton 6-1.

Reflecting on his tournament success, Mitchell told the Daily Echo: "I'm over the moon. I felt a bit rusty as I had not done many competitions in the past six weeks.

"I went to Belgium a couple of weeks ago and didn't play particularly well but sometimes you need that to happen to get you going again.

"Prior to that I hadn't played much for four weeks and in any sport, when you have a bit of a break, it's not the easiest thing to deal with.

"But then you need a break to recharge the batteries so maybe that has worked for me. It was a good confidence boost, that's for sure.

"Winning so convincingly was nice. Nobody had a dart at me, which was really good. You don't want to risk that because nine times out of 10 they seem to get it."
