JACK Holder banked a 10-point return and narrowly avoided a hefty crash in the opening round of the World Under-21 Championship at Polish venue Poznan.

On a tricky track, Pirates' rising star did well to stay upright in his semi-final when Andreas Lyager ploughed into him, the latter falling heavily.

Holder had to settle for third in the re-run after he was passed by Jevgenijs Kostigovs, with eventual round winner Maksym Drabik out in front.

Poole flier Brady Kurtz battled through the pain barrier to score six points, therefore missing out on the semi-finals.

Kurtz, who hopes to make his Pirates return in a fortnight, has been on the sidelines with a broken rib.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Paul Starke scored five points for Peterborough in their 53-39 SGB Championship win over visitors Redcar.

Richie Worrall racked up 10 paid 11 for Glasgow as they triumphed 48-36 at Scunthorpe.
