BASHLEY skipper Michael Porter says it is time for his club to shed its "nice" reputation and develop the "extra edge" and "arrogance" needed to win the league.

The Southern Premier League returns to its red-ball format tomorrow, following four weeks of 50-over cricket.

And Porter's Bash team herald the arrival of all-day action – a minimum of 120 overs are bowled per match – with a top of the table clash, at home against the Premier Division's only unbeaten side, South Wilts (11am).

Bash, with three victories from their four games, are hot on their opponents' heels in second.

Porter told the Daily Echo: "If we play how we can we will win the game. We have been guilty in the past of beating the teams we should beat, then not doing as well as we want in the bigger matches.

"If we can beat South Wilts it will send out a message that we are determined to compete this year.

"People say Bashley is a really nice club and we want to keep that reputation. But a club of our size should win the league. We have never won it and it is time we changed that.

"We want to show we have that extra edge and the arrogance and confidence to say 'yes, we can win this league'."

Australian batsman Patrick Page goes into the contest boasting an average of 84 this term and with his captain's praise ringing in his ears.

Bashley, though, will have to do without Tom Barber, the four-wicket star of last week's victory over Alton, after the paceman signed a professional deal with Middlesex.

Nonetheless, Porter has high hopes for Brad Currie, the 17-year-old who will play in Barber's stead.

"We are replacing one class bowler with another to be honest," he added. "I told Tom we wanted to offer him a platform to perform and get the professional contract he really deserved.

"Brad is a tad younger but he is on the books at Surrey Academy and we are looking forward to seeing how he gets on.

"Pat was exactly what we needed. We have always lacked one real star batsman and he has been a great addition to the side.

"And with Mitch Wilson and Simon Watkins giving it a whack down the order we have a great balance to the team."
