LEWIS Kerr could be set to feature in his last meeting for Pirates with promoter Matt Ford admitting Kyle Newman may return to the fold next month.

Kerr was signed on a minimum 28-day deal after Newman sustained shoulder injuries in March’s Darcy Ward Invitational.

And despite being impressed by the displays of Norfolk-born Kerr, Ford hopes to reintroduce his vice-captain once he is scoring points for Ipswich in the SGB Championship.

The earliest Newman could return would be the home clash with Rye House on Wednesday, May 10.

And with Pirates’ hosting Swindon on Bank Holiday Monday, Kerr is likely to don the skull and crossbones for the final time.

That could change, however, if Newman fails to hit the ground running in the second tier.

The Witches have three meetings in which Newman could feature before a potential top-flight return against Rye House, the first being at home to Berwick tomorrow.

Ford told the Daily Echo: “Lewis is doing a great job. He’s on the pace and is a lovely guy. In normal circumstances, I would do everything I could to keep him but because of Kyle, the situation is slightly different.

“I would like to bring Kyle back into the fold once he is absolutely fit. I don’t just want him to be riding, I want him to be scoring points.”

Newman, who will ride in the British semi-final, took a further step towards a competitive comeback when he practised at the Oaktree Arena following Somerset’s loss to visitors Swindon on Friday.

And the Poole-born ace has asked Ford about the prospect of a further practice session following tonight’s British under-21 final at Wimborne Road.

Kerr sustained concussion during Scunthorpe’s 48-42 win at Berwick on Saturday, a meeting in which he scored nine points.
