NEW Milton co-chairman Scot MacFarlane hailed Shane Sheridan "a huge asset to the club" after confirming he had been appointed permanent manager of the Wessex One outfit.

Sheridan has revived the club's fortunes since being installed on an interim basis in January, presiding over six wins and three draws during his 13 games at the helm.

The former Bashley striker stepped in after Linnets had lost no fewer than 10 games on the trot – and plotted a 2-1 win over promotion-chasing Shaftesbury in his first game.

Sheridan has overseen a number of impressive results including a 5-0 victory over Hythe & Dibden, New Milton's biggest win for 16 months, MacFarlane told the Daily Echo: "Shane has been a huge asset to the club since we installed him as interim manager.

"He has brought in a few players and revitalised certain others in the squad. The players showed they wanted him to get the job permanently with some of the results they have achieved.

"We sat down with Shane after the win at Andover New Street on Saturday and set out our goals for next season."

Sheridan is also registered as a player for New Milton, although he has been plagued by a persistent back injury this season.

The 27-year-old told the Daily Echo: "It is fantastic to be offered the job on a permanent basis.

"When I was brought in, the club set me a goal and I am lucky enough that the players helped me hit that target.

"We had some great results but I always look at the other games we should have taken points from and that is what needs to improve.

"Scot, Jordan Hiscock and the committee have been really helpful when required but have allowed me to put my own stamp on things.

"I also owe huge thanks to Joe Sullivan, Luke Somerscales and Jason Gill who have been with me on the journey so far. Next season will be all about improving things again and I can't wait."

Meanwhile, Poppies could take another significant step towards ensuring Sydenhams Wessex Premier safety when they host Team Solent tomorrow (7.45pm).

The Victoria Park outfit moved four points clear of the drop zone thanks to Saturday's crucial 1-0 win over Hamworthy United and would earn themselves further breathing space with victory over the Students.

Bashley host Alresford Town in their penultimate home game of the season, while Brockenhurst travel to Cowes Sports (both 7.45pm).
