LEADING try-scorer Wyn Roberts admits he has given up setting personal targets – because it only hinders his attacking potency.

The 29-year-old Bournemouth winger, a doctor by profession, has nine scores in 11 National Three South West fixtures this season.

In the last campaign, Christchurch-based Roberts came within three tries of Sam Yarwood’s club record of 27 in a season, the Welshman confessing his attempts to beat that landmark had resulted in a “mental block”.

So this term the winger has focused on other areas of his game, with a more laid-back approach seemingly paying dividends.

Speaking ahead of today’s trip to Newton Abbot, Roberts told the Daily Echo: “I used to set myself targets but it became a mental block so it’s now something I’m really trying not to do.

“Last year I got so close to the club record and towards the end of the season I would be so down if I didn’t score.

“Now my focus this year is defence – where I have been weak in the past – so I’m thinking about that and am therefore more relaxed about everything else.

“I’ve been trying to work on handling skills and being more of a provider. If I can suck defenders in and create space for others then I’m happy. I’m getting a little bit older and lot balder and I’m slowing down a bit so I needed to add something new to my game.”
