MANAGER Matty Holmes insists Southern League big guns Hereford would underestimate Wimborne at their peril.

Magpies host the unbeaten Division One South & West leaders tomorrow – with a bumper crowd set to converge on Cuthbury (3pm).

Formed from the ashes of Hereford United, a Football League club until 2012, the Bulls have dropped just two points from their first 10 games.

Managed by one-time Cherries loan player Peter Beadle, Hereford were promoted after storming the Midland Football League in their first season and were runners-up to Morpeth in the FA Vase.

Since taking the reins at Cuthbury in May, Holmes has assembled a young and energetic squad and is convinced the Magpies can give the Bulls a run for their money if they play to their potential.

The former Cherries man told the Daily Echo: “I’ve been in the pro game long enough to know that if they don’t come and treat us with respect, they will find out pretty sharpish what we are all about.

“We treat every team with huge respect but set out how we want to play and will go from there.

“I played at Edgar Street a few times in my Bournemouth days and it is a wonderful club.

“My brother Danny was at Aldershot in the 1990s when they rose from the flames and started in the Ryman League.

“I was at West Ham at the time but would get to the odd game and they took coach loads of supporters to some of the smaller grounds.

“This game is reminiscent of that and I’m looking forward to seeing their fans come to our ground.

“Hopefully, they will like the way we play and we can enjoy watching the way their team plays. It promises to be a great occasion.”

Wimborne again turned on the style when they registered a deserved 2-1 victory at AFC Totton in the FA Trophy on Tuesday and Holmes will be hoping for more of the same against high-flying Hereford.

He added: “We are trying to pass and move the ball and excite whoever comes to watch us. We want to entertain and I won’t have any long ball.

“As manager, I want to watch us play and want them to excite me. At the moment, they are doing that.

“I’ll take conceding goals on the chin as long as we are trying to play. That’s what I’m all about.

“We will lose games trying to play but, if they work hard and pass the ball, I will have no issue with them at all.

“Hopefully, people will want to watch us against a very good Hereford side that should get automatic promotion.”

Magpies are again set to be without playmaker Luke Holmes who has been sidelined recently with an ankle injury.

And there is a fresh injury concern surrounding Billy Maybury. He was replaced at half-time at Totton after taking a knock.
