TWO brothers from Poole Swimming Club won medals at the European Triathle and Biathle Championships in Portugal.

Liam and Ryan Openshaw represented Team Great Britain in Setubal and both made the podium.

Ryan, 11, finished 11th in the individual under-13 triathle – a run-shoot-swim event – before winning bronze in the mixed triathle relay with team-mate Georgia Gussey from Avon & Somerset.

Liam, 13, came fifth on the first day of competition in the individual under-15 triathle and then produced a podium performance in the Biathle – a run-swim-run event – finishing third.

Both boys have already qualified to represent GB at the World Triathle Championships in Sarasota in Florida in October.

Poole Swimming Club head coach Barry Alldrick said: "I am delighted with the boys' performances in Portugal.

"To see them maturely think about what they needed to do from heat to final makes us

proud that they have both come home with European medals.

"They have both worked hard this season under the guidance of age group coach Jan Hutchings and this has led to them both completing strong swims in Portugal."
