Athletics: Dorset athletes claimed three of the six gold medals at the South West Combined Events Championships.

Ryan Long dominated the senior boys’ decathlon with a total of 6,258, leaving him 900 points clear of his nearest rival.

The Queen Elizabeth’s School, Wimborne, pupil included a wind-assisted 11.19s 100m, 6.15m long jump, 1.76m high jump and 14.98s for 110m hurdles in his tour de force.

Bethan Burley of Canford School took the inter girls’ heptathlon crown with 12.00s for 80m hurdles, a 1.53m high jump and 11.59m shot putt among her featured events.

Cameron Hale (Bournemouth School) inched inter boys' gold by just three points with 43.70m discus and 13.43m shot the best of his eight events.

Meanwhile, Danielle Broom turned the tables on the English Schools’ champion to achieve a winning international discus debut.

Broom missed out by 71cm to Isobel Griffin Morris in Gateshead, but the Avonbourne College student made amends as the top two intermediate girls’ discus throwers represented English Schools versus their Irish, Scottish and Welsh counterparts at Ashford in Kent.

Broom led from round one with 37.12m. Her second round 39.97m proved enough for victory, but she kept the pressure on with 37.22m on her third attempt.

With victory almost certain, Broom rounded off with 40.93m, while her rival achieved a sixth round 38.50m.
