LEWIS McManus’s heroics proved in vain as Hampshire were condemned to defeat by fellow County Championship Division One strugglers Surrey at the Ageas Bowl yesterday.

Poole-born McManus gave Hampshire hope of salvaging a draw after hitting his maiden senior century and sharing in a record 10th-wicket partnership for the county against Surrey in their first innings.

McManus finished unbeaten on 132, his 265-ball stay including 19 fours and two sixes, with a stand of 96 with Brad Wheal taking Hampshire to 423 – 214 behind Surrey’s 637 for seven declared.

Hampshire’s previous highest 10th-wicket stand against Surrey was 90 between Dimi Mascarenhas and Simon Francis at The Oval in 2000.

McManus, who attended Lytchett Minster School, surpassed the unbeaten 53 he made during his gutsy innings against Durham last season which was the catalyst for Hampshire’s Great Escape.

However, despite his exploits, which also included a seventh-wicket stand of 77 with Gareth Berg as the hosts followed-on, Hampshire were beaten by an innings and 13 runs.

McManus (35) and Berg (38) had threatened to thwart Surrey before both fell in quick succession as Hampshire lost their final four wickets for just three runs.
