SIMON Francis has been named Cherries captain ahead of the forthcoming Premier League campaign.

The 31-year-old defender assumes the mantle following the departure of Tommy Elphick to Aston Villa.

Andrew Surman has been handed the position of vice-captain, Francis's previous role.

The decision to give Francis the armband comes as no surprise given he performed the role on an interim basis during Elphick's absence, partially through injury, last term.

Reflecting on the honour, Francis said: “I’m delighted. Taking on the mantle of the armband last season in Tommy’s absence when he got the injury was a huge step for me.

“I had captained the club previously in the Championship and enjoyed every minute of it.

“I enjoyed every aspect of taking control of the situation and being able to lead the lads out and lead by example, as I did, hopefully, on a few occasions and I continued it last season as well. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

“Even the games you aren’t successful in, you still take responsibility as captain. Next season is a huge season for me and it's one I’m looking forward to as captain.

“I am hugely grateful to the gaffer for considering me. Having spoken to him at the start of pre-season he told me his intentions to make me club captain and it’s just a massive privilege to have that name now.”

Francis was speaking to the club website.
