HAMWORTHY United are understood to have targeted Wimborne Town legend Paul Roast to replace Shane Traynor as manager.

The 38-year-old, a veteran of more than 400 appearances at Cuthbury, served as assistant manager to Magpies boss Steve Cuss for three years before embarking on a goalkeeping career with Christchurch.

He returned to his post at Wimborne having left Priory and had a brief spell in charge alongside revered coach John Macey when Cuss stood down in November.

Roast had been a popular choice for the top job among Town supporters but ruled himself out from day one, citing time constraints.

But the Cuthbury stalwart is thought to be considering the Hammers post on the basis that it involves less travelling with chairman Steve Harvey said to be keen on a swift appointment.

Speculation linking Alan Lay with the job, prompted by his departure from Verwood Town this morning, is understood to be wide of the mark, although United are likely to start a fresh recruitment process should Roast turn down the job.
