Cherries Academy coaches Alan Connell and Mark Molesley experienced mixed fortunes as Weymouth overcame Poole in the second round of the Southern League Cup on Tuesday.

Connell and Molesley, two of Cherries’ heroes of the past who both played key roles during Eddie Howe’s first spell as manager, lined up on opposite sides in the second round tie at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

And while midfielder Molesley netted a stunning 20-yard free-kick to clinch victory for the Terras, striker Connell missed a penalty as holders Poole were eliminated by their Dorset rivals.

Weymouth were forced to come from behind after Poole had taken an early lead when Emil Salama produced a neat finish to beat goalkeeper Steve Boore in the 10th minute.

But Weymouth’s response was immediate and a quickly-taken free-kick found its way to Dolphins old boy Adam Kelly on the edge of the area and he curled a superb effort beyond a static Tom Rees.

Both sides went close to scoring again before the break with Toby Holmes having a shot saved low down by Boore before Jordan Copp drew a fine save from Rees with a stinging left-foot drive.

Following his heroics in the previous round during a penalty shootout win at Wimborne, Boore kept the hosts on level terms in the second half with a string of fine saves.

Firstly, he turned Salama’s effort past the post after the striker had gone through one-on-one before Boore made a superb double save to deny both Connell and Jamie White.

Weymouth took the lead when Molesley despatched a measured free-kick past Rees in the 60th minute before Poole were presented with a golden opportunity to level after Copp had tripped Salama in the box.

But Connell promptly proceeded to blast the resultant spot-kick high over the crossbar as Poole’s hopes of taking the tie to penalties bit the dust.

Morgan Browning, son of ex-Cherries and Weymouth star Marcus Browning, came on as a half-time sub for Poole, while George Richardson, son of non-league legend Taffy Richardson, played the full 90 minutes.
