ACADEMY manager Joe Roach felt Cherries under-18s could have won even more emphatically following their 2-0 victory at Yeovil.

The youngsters maintained their 100 per cent winning start in the Youth Alliance South West Conference thanks to a second-half brace from Sam Surridge.

The visitors took the lead 10 minutes after the restart when a ball over the top fell to Surridge, who drove forward at pace, beat his marker and placed his shot low into the net.

Carl Fletcher’s team doubled their lead with 15 minutes remaining when they executed a superb training-ground move from a free-kick just outside the box.

Midfielder Matt Worthington flicked the ball over the wall and Surridge spun expertly and lobbed the goalkeeper.

Roach said: “I’m not too sure what the statistics said but we controlled the game throughout. We must have had at least 80 per cent possession.

“We were in total control from the start, which was pleasing to see this early into the season.

“It was a little frustrating as we could have easily have finished with more goals to our name but we couldn’t get the breakthrough that we deserved.

“In the second half, we worked on getting a higher amount of balls into attacking areas as it’s frustrating not to capitalise on good build-up play and nice possession.

“The beauty of the game was that we had sufficient possession, which allowed us to bed in one or two things we’ve worked on in training.”

Previewing the first home league fixture against Plymouth on Saturday, Roach said: “We know Plymouth very well from last season.

"We had a couple of really hard and challenging games against them, so we know it won’t be easy.

“As he does every week, Carl will prepare the team appropriately based on the information and analysis from Saturday’s game, as we continue to look forward and improve as the season progresses.”

Roach spoke to the club website.
