CHERRIES under-21s were denied the silverware in Weymouth's four-team 125th anniversary tournament after suffering a 2-0 defeat to winners Torquay United.

The competition, played in a league format with matches lasting 15 minutes per half, also featured AFC Totton and hosts Weymouth.

Totton beat Torquay 1-0 in the opener courtesy of a first-half penalty from Craig Feeney, with Cherries following up with an entertaining 0-0 draw against Weymouth.

Striker Stewart Yetton and George Rigg had chances for the Terras, while Mason Walsh, who spent stints at both Dorchester Town and Poole Town last term, nipped in between two defenders in the second half but fired wide for Cherries.

Weymouth player-manager Jason Matthews was then smartly off his line to thwart the onrushing Ben Whitfield but the deadlock was not to be broken.

Weymouth then suffered a 1-0 defeat to Torquay before Stephen Purches’s side showed their class in a 3-0 win over Totton.

Trialist Ben Pope bagged a brace with frontman Joe Quigley rounding off a dominant display.

But following on from that positive performance, Cherries ran out of steam and were defeated 2-0 by Torquay.

Ollie Pearce and Liam Prynn struck either side of half time for the Gulls, who went on to win the tournament as Weymouth beat Totton 1-0 in the final fixture.
