BOURNEMOUTH’S Jay Lelliott saw off the world’s best students to win gold and silver medals in South Korea.

The 20-year-old won both the heat and final of the 400m freestyle to become World University Games champion in Gwanju.

His winning time of 3:51.41 saw him finish a mere 0.07 seconds ahead of Australia’s Jack McLoughlin and just outside the Dorset record that won him European bronze last year.

In the 800m freestyle, the Bath University student carved 11 seconds off his county record to claim silver in 7:50.97, missing gold by less than a second.

The Commonwealth Games 1500m freestyle finalist also qualified fastest in the same event in Korea but slipped to fourth in the final, despite an improved time of 15:07.84, and hard-to-please Lelliott was still not completely satisfied with his gold.

“If I had done a personal best time as well I would have said it was a career highlight but I would say it was second to the Europeans when I got bronze in the 400m,” he said.

“It is definitely a huge highlight but I would have loved to have got a personal best time as well.”
