BOURNEMOUTH captain Martin Miller hailed the exploits of David Kidner after the experienced campaigner had inspired victory over Hartley Wintney.

The 33-year-old ripped into the Hartley Wintney batting as he recorded figures of five for 24 and helped restrict the visitors to 125 all out at Chapel Gate.

And the veteran paceman then hit 24 valuable runs to send Bournemouth on their way to a nerve-jangling one-wicket victory.

Miller, who cracked a crucial 40, told the Daily Echo: "David had a toe operation in the winter and he is still not fully fit, so for him to take five for 24 and then to follow it up with 24 runs was a great effort.

"On his day he is one of the best bowlers in this league if not the league above and while I wouldn't say he was unplayable, Hartley Wintney found it very difficult to cope with him.

"David played Minor Counties cricket for Dorset for a reason and showed glimpses of that on Saturday. He put the ball in the right areas and really caused them problems.

"He set us on the right route with the ball and did extremely well with the bat, so he had a day to remember."

While delighted by the overall bowling and fielding displays, Miller was less enamoured by his team's efforts with the willow.

The skipper had been unimpressed by Bournemouth's batting performances in the opening two weeks of the Southern Premier League season and he admitted it had been a similar story this time round.

However, Miller confessed that he had just been relieved to secure a first Division One win of 2015 off the back of successive league defeats.

He added: "We knew we had to bat better than we had in recent weeks and, put simply, we didn't.

"Our top five didn't fire and we created pressure for ourselves with poor shot selection. We need to apply ourselves better when we bat.

"Me and David managed to get us close to the total and the other lads finished it off.

"We scraped home at the death so it was far from comfortable. It was one of those afternoons where you just hope you get over the line.

"Winning is a habit and you have to get into it, so I will take a one-wicket win.

"It was important to win and we won without playing well, which was a positive sign for us."

Bournemouth are eighth in the Division One standings with just Hartley Wintney and Liphook & Ripsley below them.
