POOLE Pirates reserve Kyle Newman has been named in Great Britain’s initial 10-man squad for the Speedway World Cup in June.

Team GB will compete in Event Two at King’s Lynn on June 8 where they take on USA, Austria and Latvia with the winners progressing to the final held at Vojens five days later.

Reigning champions and hosts Denmark qualify automatically for the four-team final with the winners of Event One and the subsequent race-off making up the quartet.

The 23-year-old will have his work cut out to overthrow the likes of Grand Prix stars Tai Woffinden and Chris Harris to claim a place in the four-man team but the Elite League’s top fast-track rider insists he is pleased just to be considered.

Newman told the Daily Echo: “The past few weeks have not gone to plan for me. It has been rough with the injuries and infection but getting this news makes it all a lot easier to deal with.

“Knowing you have done enough to get into that squad is a great feeling. I haven’t really thought too much about it all yet but whether or not I ride, I hope to travel and take it all in. It will be a great experience.

“I am chuffed just to be in there. It is a great honour and, if selected, I hope to do myself and Poole Pirates proud.”

TEAM GB: Tai Woffinden, Chris Harris, Craig Cook, Danny King, Robert Lambert, Richie Worrall, Kyle Howarth, Lewis Kerr, Richard Lawson, Kyle Newman.
