JACOB Peters’s British Swimming Championships bow ended in heartbreak as disqualification wrecked his hopes of an international debut.

The Poole 15-year-old experienced ecstasy initially when he twice smashed a Dorset junior record that had stood for eight years.

His times of 2:10.26 and 2:09.03 in the heats and 15-16yrs final of the 200m butterfly lowered Chris Campbell’s record by 2.71sec.

The times placed him fifth in the final and raised hopes of European Youth Olympics qualification in his best event, the 100m butterfly.

Peters clocked the fastest time heat time of 57.26sec, only to be disqualified for swimming more than the maximum 15m under water.

Poole coach Barry Alldrick said: “The disqualification was heartbreaking. But Jacob has the mindset of a high-performing athlete and this setback will make him stronger and even hungrier for success.”

There was disappointment too for Swim Bournemouth’s 2014 European bronze medallist Jay Lelliott, who could finish only third in the 1500m freestyle in 15:09.51, 11 seconds outside his personal best.

His second place in the men’s 200m butterfly theoretically leaves the door open for a place in Britain’s world championships team but with a time of 1:58.04, even this does not look promising.

Lelliott, 20, was also sixth in the 400m freestyle in 3:49.55 and 13th in the 200m freestyle (1:50.25).

Bournemouth Collegiate School’s Beth Aitchison broke her own Dorset senior records with times of 1:09.45 and 2:31.54 in the heats of the women’s 100 and 200m breaststroke.

She went on to finish eighth in the 100m final in 1:09.49 and was 12th in the 200m and 13th in the 200m individual medley (2:18.06).

Swim Bournemouth’s Harriet Perfect, 15, missed a place in the 15-16yrs 200m backstroke final by just two places as she came 10th in the heats in 2:21.97.
