CHERRIES manager Eddie Howe says he would be against the use of video replays to determine debatable refereeing decisions.

Howe’s team has been on the wrong end of some questionable decisions this season, not least Lee Mason’s failure to award them a goal at Cardiff last month.

The Premier League official ruled out Callum Wilson’s strike after goalkeeper Simon Moore’s attempted clearance had struck him on the back.

Earlier this season, Howe wrote to Football League referees’ chief David Allison to seek his observations on a series of contentious decisions during some of Cherries’ first few games.

And although Howe said he had been encouraged following “positive dialogue” with Allison, the trend has continued throughout the campaign.

Cherries have also been on the right end of some refereeing decisions with Middlesbrough boss Aitor Karanka claiming they were awarded two dubious penalties during their 3-0 win over the Teessiders last month.

Asked whether he hoped the Championship promotion race would not be decided by a series of controversial decisions, Howe replied: “Of course you don’t, you want it to be decided by football.

“I said after we had been victims of one against Cardiff, you hope that, over a season, it balances itself out. We were robbed of two points at Cardiff with a decision I thought was really poor.

“I thought the game against Middlesbrough had been decided before the second penalty but I can understand potential controversy with that.

“You always want the football to decide and I think, ultimately, it will. You just hope the referees give as honest decisions as they can and that is all you can ask of them.”

Asked about possible solutions, Howe said: “You could bring in video replays but do we want to see that in football? Do we want the game to be slowed down?

“I think there is a lot of debate to be had before we change the game we love and part of what we love about it is the debating of decisions and the arguments.

“I am not trying to be wise because we had a decision go in our favour against Middlesbrough. That is certainly not the case because we have been victims of some shocking ones this season, as probably most clubs have.

“What we can do about that? Well, that is probably for better people than me to decide.”
