POOLE Town kept their hopes of a memorable double on course as they secured Southern League Cup final glory at the expense of Corby.

Dolphins edged to victory on away goals after a 0-0 stalemate at Tatnam had successfully supplemented a 1-1 draw at Steel Park two weeks previously.

Banned Tom Killick might not have been in attendance but the Dolphins boss would have been pleased to strike a psychological blow to Poole’s Southern Premier title rivals.

And a decent portion of the 500-plus fans in attendance made their ecstasy clear with a mini pitch invasion at the final whistle.

Five changes were made to the Poole side that had defeated Cambridge, with Luke Roberts, Tom Whelan, Billy Lowes, Will Spetch and Charlie Davis brought in.

Roberts made a significant impression with just 11 seconds gone when his rising drive fizzed a whisker over the bar after he had expertly latched on to a long ball.

Haphazard Corby defending afforded the hosts another presentable opportunity soon after but loanee Mason Walsh lifted over when well-placed.

Roberts’ pace was causing plenty of problems and the frontman spurned a one-on-one with keeper Paul Walker before hooking a more difficult chance wide in the 17th minute.

On a rare Corby foray forward, ex-Scunthorpe winger Cleveland Taylor directed wide the visitors’ best chance of the opening half an hour.

Luke Burbidge ran out of angle after he had seized on Steve Devlin’s pass over the top while at the other end, Wilson Carvalho pulled disappointingly wide.

Four minutes before the break, Roberts’ pull-back proved a fraction too far behind the motoring Whelan and the forward stabbed clear of the bar.

There was no lack of endeavour from either side after the restart but the only chance of note in the early stages was a sliced Devlin effort from range.

Poole captain Jamie Whisken was yellow-carded after he had chopped down Kalern Thomas with the substitute poised to burst into the box, with Taylor’s resultant free-kick coming to nothing.

A hopeful effort from Burbidge drifted a couple of yards wide before Herve Pepe N’Goma saw his close-range shot rebound off the upright midway through the half.

Whelan, a lively presence throughout, forced a decent block from Walker after his first touch had taken him wider than he had intended.

As the minutes ticked down, Whelan released Roberts in behind but with the goal gaping, the Dolphins striker slid agonisingly wide of the left post.

Lowes stretched stopper Walker in the closing stages but in the end a 0-0 draw proved enough.
