MANAGER Eddie Howe dedicated Cherries’ victory over Middlesbrough to the memory of long-time supporter Dave Barnes, who died just hours before kick-off.
Mr Barnes, who had been a fan since 1969, passed away in the Macmillan Unit at Christchurch Hospital following a battle with lung cancer.
Having been diagnosed in February 2014, Mr Barnes had contacted the club earlier this season to ask whether he could meet the players and management as part of his bucket list.
He first met them ahead of the 5-3 win over Cardiff in December and saw them again before last week’s 4-0 victory over Blackpool after being told he had just a fortnight to live.
Brett Pitman and his team-mates immediately made a beeline for the East Stand where they celebrated the striker’s first goal against Blackpool with Mr Barnes.
Howe told the Daily Echo: “I found out a couple of hours before kick-off that Dave had sadly passed away and told the players before the game.
“It was very sad especially when you consider he had been in front of the players just a week ago showing tremendous bravery, spirit and determination to support his club and his team.
“He was so proud of what the players have achieved this season so it seemed fitting we won for him and his family. Our thoughts are with his wife and with Dave at this very sad time.”
