BOURNEMOUTH judoka Adam Conroy has his sights set firmly on the British number one spot after continuing his return from injury with gold at the BUCS Nationals in Sheffield.

Great Britain fighter Conroy has spent the last six months watching on from the sidelines after a back injury sustained in 2014 left him unable to fight.

But he returned to the mat with a third-place finish in the men’s under-60kg at the Matsumae Cup Vejle in Denmark earlier this month before success came his way in the Steel City on Saturday.

The New Forest Park Judo Club member was in determined mood, defeating George Goldsmith to retain his title from last year before setting his sights on further glory this year.

“I felt good on the mat. Last week in Denmark was the first time I had fought in about six months because of a back injury from last year,” said the 22-year-old University of Bath student.

“As an international fighter there’s quite a lot of pressure on you at BUCS, because you’re representing your university and you want to win medals like the rest of my team.

“That pressure is always good though because it shows you’re a dominant player. You’ve just got to live up to the expectation.

“I want to medal in the senior European Cup, and also go out to European events and get my ranking up again.

“I want to finish the year as British number one.

“I forgot to enter BUCS in my first year, but then came in my second and won it. I always get reminded to enter now, especially after the telling off I got when I forgot.”
