SCOTT Mitchell admitted he had been the architect of his own downfall having suffered a second-round exit to Wayne Warren at the World Darts Trophy.

The Bransgore-based BDO world champion lost five legs in a row during a 7-2 defeat to the Welshman at Event City, Manchester yesterday.

'Scotty Dog' scored well throughout the contest and hit 100 or more no fewer than 22 times in nine legs but revealed a loss of focus had proved costly.

Mitchell told the Daily Echo: “I had been there with him all the way but missed a few doubles and that made all the difference.

“It was a funny one because I had been happy with my game and maintained a strong average but, having done that, I wobbled on a couple of checkouts.

“When I missed double nine to break his throw, I started to beat myself up a little bit and, the next thing I knew, I had lost my own throw. At 4-2 down, I had four or five minutes to fester over the mistakes which made matters worse.

“Then, I missed four darts to break back and two darts to hold my own throw so it was frustrating because I had the opportunities. That four-leg period defined the game.”

Mitchell's next assignment is on the Isle of Man with the Classic kicking off on Thursday and the Open beginning 24 hours later at the Villa Marina, Douglas.
