TOM Killick admitted he had been disappointed not to capitalise further on rivals’ slip-ups after Poole Town had played out a sterile 0-0 draw with St Neots.

While Dolphins were held by the determined Saints at Tatnam, title rivals Corby and Weymouth were sunk at Biggleswade and Chesham, respectively.

And although boss Killick was naturally pleased by his team’s strengthened position, he was also downhearted to hold only a two-point lead at the Southern Premier summit.

Killick told the Daily Echo: “Sometimes you look at the other teams’ fixtures and hope that results will go your way. Having looked at the fixtures, I knew Weymouth faced a difficult game but I was a little bit surprised that Corby lost at Biggleswade.

“Although Weymouth and Corby both dropped points, they were playing away from home and away fixtures are difficult.

“We need to win our home games and I did feel this was a little bit of a missed opportunity. In future weeks, things are going to be reversed as our rivals will play at home and we will play away.

“It was frustrating not to win at home but that frustration was tempered by the other results.”

Poole had the better of the chances in the first half. Keith Emmerson went close on two occasions, firing wide early on before bringing a diving save out of veteran goalkeeper Paul Bastock seconds before half-time.

In between, defender Michael Walker was clearly held in the box by St Neots captain Adam Tann but nothing was given.

The visitors were an improved proposition after the interval but dangerous moments were a rarity. Dolphins stopper Nick Hutchings saved comfortably from a Bruce Wilson header while Tann nodded over from a corner.

Marvin Brooks might have put the hosts in front but smashed a fraction over the bar on the half-volley.

Killick added: “The game was definitely short on quality. In the first half, we played reasonably well without creating enough clear-cut chances.

“In the second half, I thought we would carry on in the same vein and possibly get a breakthrough but St Neots were much better so that didn’t happen.

“They were probably the better side in the second half so you have to say that overall we didn’t play well enough to win the game.”

Dolphins: Hutchings, Tallack, Lindsay, Walker, Whisken, Pettefer, Burbidge, Devlin, Quigley (Gillespie, 64), Brooks (Close, 81), Emmerson (Roberts, 64). Unused subs: Davis, Spetch.
