CALLUM Wilson has insisted he was right to reject the summer overtures of Championship heavyweights Norwich in favour of Eddie Howe’s long-term vision for Cherries.

The 22-year-old has emerged as one the Football League’s hottest prospects following his switch from Coventry City, his 13 goals instrumental in guiding Cherries to the top of the table and record-breaking cup success.

Wilson’s 22-goal haul for the Sky Blues prompted a pre-season bidding war with several second-tier clubs expressing their interest in his services.

In the end it came down to a straight shootout between Cherries and the Canaries with the sought-after striker visiting both clubs during his decision-making process.

Speaking exclusively to the Daily Echo ahead of tomorrow’s home clash with City (3pm), Wilson lifted the lid on how his faith in Howe’s blueprint had swayed his decision to turn down the ambitious Norfolk outfit.

“I went up there and looked round the stadium and facilities before I came to Bournemouth,” said Wilson.

“One of the main reasons I chose Bournemouth over Norwich was the fact that the manager was more proven at this level. I wanted to make sure I would get that one-to-one learning to help me progress as a player.

"Norwich had just been relegated from the Premier League and have ambitions to get back there straight away. They wanted players that were ready and while I felt like I would have been, you also need a helping hand from the manager now and again to carry on improving.

“They brought in the likes of Cameron Jerome who has Premier League quality and that showed they were looking at the now rather than the long-term.

“I made my decision based on what I felt would be best for my career and thought I would get the opportunity to play more football here.

“In my mind, I always felt making the step up would not be as hard as people made out and having a chance to properly showcase my talent was a big factor. I didn’t really want to be in a stop-start situation.

“It was important for me to hit the ground running, maintain my form and get goals as quickly as possible.”

Wilson continued: “Every player wants to play in every game. That is how you pick up form, go on runs and get confidence.

“When the manager rotates it for cup games, I sometimes feel disappointed inside because I want to be out there all the time.

“If you haven’t scored in your last game you want to put it right and if you have, you want to keep your form going. You always want to play so it feels great to be involved.

“It is a real team effort. Everyone is playing well and chipping in so hopefully we can carry it on and get to where we all want to be.”
