CHARLIE Rowberry scored five tries as Swanage & Wareham made hay during their first visit to Bradford-on-Avon’s Ashley Lane headquarters.

Rowberry’s five-timer helped Swans register a convincing 58-7 win in Wiltshire – their 11th successive victory in Southern Counties South.

Swans were dominant from the first scrum and, after the ball had been passed along the three-quarters, winger Rowberry touched down in the corner after only 90 seconds.

The visitors doubled their lead when Callum Baird came into the line and caused an overlap, the full-back scoring out wide after 10 minutes.

Baird again came into the line 10 minutes later but moved the ball to Rowberry who scored under the posts with Baird adding the extras to put Swans 17-0 ahead.

Hooker Robert Elford marked his return from a six-week injury layoff by scoring a try after Swans had pushed back the Bradford pack from a five-metre scrum in the 20th minute.

Rowberry picked up the ball from a scrum inside Swans’ half and brushed off several tackles before scoring a fine solo try to compete his hat-trick after 30 minutes.

And Swans reached the break leading 34-0 after a move along the backs ended with Row-berry breaking clear before he passed to second row Will Corsie who went over for his debut try with Baird again adding the extras.

Rowberry added a fourth try five minutes into the second half and Charlie Parish’s conversion made it 41-0 before the hosts reduced the arrears with their first score, a converted try.

Swans continued to dominate set-pieces and a catch-and-drive move after 56 minutes ended with Elford going over for his second try, which was converted to make it 48-7.

Parish worked his way over the try-line before Rowberry capped a memorable individual display by completing the scoring with his fifth touchdown four minutes from time.

Swans received a further boost following the final whistle when news came through of a surprise defeat for second-placed Sherborne by Frome, a result which left Swans 11 points clear at the top of the table.

  • Bournemouth battled back to grab a 17-17 draw with Old Redcliffians at Chapel Gate.

Lions led the National Three South West clash 10-0 at the break but required a late try from Wyn Robets and the subsequent conversion from Jon Sanchez to share the spoils.

Bournemouth drew first blood when Lewis Dennett found touch for a five-metre line-out and Cyprus international George Antoniades was driven over.

Dennett missed the conversion but it was not long before the hosts added to their tally when Matt Warwick charged in to score his first try for Bournemouth.

Referee Harrison Tait later penalised the hosts for not rolling away but Ashley Groves thumped his kick against the post and in the ensuing passage of play, the Redcliffians wing lost the ball as he crossed over.

Following the resumption, the away side reduced the advantage to three points. From a Lions 22m drop-out, they attacked to the left and outside-centre Henry Goldson broke through the score left of the posts. Groves added the extras.

Redcliffians had their tails up and a Groves kick found touch on the five-metre line, from which the Bristol side secured possession and forced their way across the whitewash.

Groves slotted the conversion be-tween the uprights and the same man then found the mark with a penalty.

Seven points down, Bournemouth upped the tempo and captain Alan Manning led a charge from midfield that took the hosts deep into enemy territory. Roberts was on hand to dive under the posts and Sanchez levelled matters with a simple kick.

Lions: Hancox, Sutherland, Connolly, Chislett, Roberts, Dennett, Hardcastle, Terry, Richardson, Manning, Antoniades, Warwick, Hennings, Dunkerley, Rees. Replacements: Ashburner, Firetto, Sanchez.

  • Wimborne maintained their 100 per cent winning record at home with a hard-fought 31-22 victory over Southern Counties South rivals Walcot at Leigh Park.

Bath-based Walcot opened the scoring with an unconverted try from a rolling maul before Paul Roberts touched down with James Mikolajewski adding the extras to give Wimborne a two-point advantage.

Walcot capitalised on some sloppy defending to regain the lead with another unconverted try before Wimborne again hit back when a tap penalty was fed to Steve King who crashed over. Mikolajewski converted to give them a 14-10 lead at the break.

Early in the second half, Walcot attempted to run the ball out of their own 22 but an errant pass was picked up by Doug Robertson who went over by the posts for a try which was converted by Mikolajewski.

The Minstermen were reduced to 13 men and Walcot made their numerical supremacy count with an unconverted try from a rolling maul.

However, Wimborne soon re-turned to the attack and extended their lead with a try in the corner by Mikolajewski who also calmly knocked over the conversion.

Walcot reduced the arrears with a converted try to give them a try-scoring bonus point before Wimborne had Robertson red carded.

But the hosts wrapped up victory when Walcot were forced to concede a penalty, which Mikolajewski slotted between the uprights to secure the five points which moved them above their opponents into fourth place.

  • Injury-hit Ellingham & Ringwood were forced to turn to 57-year-old coach Steve Benson during their 35-18 defeat at Purley John Fisher.

Benson, the only available front-row cover, came on as a 65th-minute replacement for Luke Reynolds after the prop forward had damaged his arm.

Ellingham & Ringwood put in a determined performance against their London Division Three South West rivals with Kali Tuitecki scoring two tries.
