REIGNING British and European trampoline champion Izzy Songhurst completed a remarkable hat-trick by winning gold at the World Championships in the United States.

The talented Corfe Hills schoolgirl won the 15-16-year-old individual category at the age group championships held in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Songhurst also won a bronze medal with partner Zainub Akbar in the 17-18-year-old synchronised event.

And to complete a memorable few days for the Songhurst family, sister Maddy won silver in the 11-12-year-old synchronised final with partner Jessica Clark from Birmingham.

Izzy, who is a member of the Poole-based OLGA club, went into her final in third place behind opponents from Canada and Japan.

But she climbed to the top of the leader board after the Canadian fell and faced an anxious wait for her Japanese rival to complete the final round of routines.

“When the Japanese girl's score went up it said rank two by her name and the whole GB team erupted in the stands when they realised Izzy had won,” said proud mum Jodi.

Izzy’s winning finale crowned an extremely successful 12 months.

“I've had an amazing year,” admitted  Izzy. “I became British champion for the fourth year in a row, won the European championships and am now a world champion.

“My win at the Europeans meant I started receiving National Lottery funding which should now increase after my win in Florida.”

Izzy, who also won a silver medal at the prestigious Australian Youth Olympics in 2012, hopes to compete at the very highest level.

“I'm too young to compete at the Rio Olympics so my long-term target is the Tokyo Olympics in 2020,” she explained.

“I have two or three years until I become a senior so I am now focused on ensuring I am completely ready for my transition into the higher level.

“This is just the beginning and I'm excited to see what I am able to achieve in the next few years.”

Izzy’s first priority is her GCSE’s before staying at Corfe Hills School to do her A Levels.

In total, OLGA had six competitors at the world age group championships in Florida, with their manager Sharon Wood selected to head the Great Britain team.

Orla Adams won a bronze in the 13-14-year-old competition, while Ollie Simonnot (11-12 boys) and Kirsty Way (17-18 girls) both reached their respective finals.

Making up the six were Izzy’s siver-medallist sister Maddy and Isobel Leigh-Warren, who competed in the 13-14 girls' event.
