JUBILANT boss Tom Killick hailed as “a complete away performance” Poole Town’s victory against Premier Division rivals Cambridge City.

Goals either side of half-time from Jamie Whisken and Luke Burbidge earned the Dolphins a seventh successive win in all competitions.

Cambridge hosted Poole fresh from their midweek victory at high-flying St Neots, the only team to have beaten the Dolphins in the league this season.

The Lilywhites, who share Histon’s Bridge Road headquarters, had also ended Poole’s play-off hopes last season when they triumphed 2-1 at Tatnam in April.

Skipper Whisken broke the deadlock in the 40th minute and leading goalscorer Burbidge made sure of the points when he bagged his ninth of the season midway through the second half.

Killick told the Daily Echo: “I was really pleased because I thought it was a very strong performance. I wouldn’t say it was overly convincing but we controlled large parts of the game and scored two really good goals.

“You always have a bit of trepidation when you go away in this league, particularly against one of the stronger sides. Although Cambridge’s current league position says otherwise, I think they will end up being one of the stronger sides and will finish significantly higher than they are now.

“They have some good players, particularly in attacking areas, and teams aren’t going to find it easy going there. We certainly didn’t find it easy and had to put a lot into the game. It was a really credible performance and victory.”

Former Cherries apprentice Whisken, who was signed from AFC Totton in the summer of 2013 and appointed captain by Killick during his first season at the club, earned rich praise from his manager.

Killick said: “When I first signed him, I remember him looking a bit shaky during a couple of pre-season friendlies and was a bit unsure about him.

“But he has grown and grown as a player for us and is immense. He is one of those players you can rely on week in, week out.

“He is a real tower of strength in our team and such a solid and dependable character as well. I think an awful lot of him and he is an exceptional captain, both as a player and a personality.”

Killick, who also singled out Luke Roberts for his impressive display, confirmed he was hoping to extend Jack Maloney’s loan from Portsmouth ahead of tomorrow’s derby with Weymouth at the Bob Lucas Stadium.
