FEARED frontman Callum Wilson is confident his international ambitions will take care of themselves if he continues his hot streak in club colours.

Wilson became the first Cherries player to represent England under-21s since Eddie Howe in 1998 when he came on as a second-half substitute in the 3-2 friendly defeat to France on Monday.

The fixture in Brest was the latest chapter in the Three Lions’ preparations for next summer’s European Under-21 Championship, a tournament in which Wilson hopes to be involved.

However, the Championship’s player of the month for October insists his displays for Cherries are his present focus, with any subsequent England recognition being a bonus.

Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s home clash with Ipswich (3pm), Wilson told the Daily Echo: “By focusing on my club football, doing well and shooting us up the table, hopefully, that will bring perks like another call-up. There is another tournament in June and if I do well, hopefully, I will be selected for that.

“Working hard and playing well was what got me there in the first place and I will continue to do that. You have to aim high and I always try and do as well as I can every time I play because you never know who is watching.

“I tend not to dwell on success too much. I take my confidence from my performances rather than my achievements.

“You are only as good as your last game and in my last game for Bournemouth, I didn’t score. I missed a few chances as well so I will be trying to put that right against Ipswich.

“You could say my confidence was okay having been away with England but I want to get back to scoring as soon as possible to help the team win.”

Wilson hailed his maiden England under-21 experience as overwhelmingly positive and admitted he was delighted to have his national debut under his belt.

He added: “It was a good opportunity to play alongside some of the best young players in the country and it was great to play on the international stage, although the result was not what we were looking for.

“It was nice to soak up the atmosphere and the surroundings and it’s another stepping stone in my career.”
