IN-FORM darts star Scott Mitchell hopes to keep his bubble intact for another two months after lifting the Jersey Open – his sixth ranking title of the season.

Bransgore-based Mitchell came from 5-3 down to topple Middlesbrough’s Glen Durrant in a dramatic 6-5 success on the Channel Islands, gaining revenge on the man who had knocked him out of the Winmau World Masters.

Durrant missed two darts at double top to win the match with Mitchell landing a 126 checkout to take it to a decider. Durrant had his own shot at 126 to take the crown but missed the bull with Mitchell eventually landing a double 10 to win.

Mitchell, who was congratulated on his victory by Cherries star Marc Pugh, admitted his recent form had made him a prominent scalp on the circuit but remained optimistic over his chances on the biggest stage – the World Championships at Lakeside in January.

“When anyone hits this kind of form, everybody else calls you the boy in the bubble,” said Mitchell. “The thing is, they are all out to burst it so I am there to be shot at now.

“It is a great confidence booster but you cannot get too carried away because the margins are so fine. I am in the form of my life but things can quickly change if you take your eye off the ball.”

Mitchell breezed past Phil Stockton (4-1), AJ Urmston-Toft (4-0) and Martin Atkins (4-1) to reach the last eight before enduring a tough test against Kent’s Pip Blackwell (4-2). He saw off Welshman Nick Kenny 4-3 before his nerve-wracking finale with old adversary Durrant.

In the Jersey Classic, Mitchell lost in the quarter-final to fellow England international Tony O’Shea – his first-round opponent at Lakeside.

“I had won five on the trot against Tony and missed five doubles this time. In a funny way, I was pleased he got his jinx out of the way rather than firing him up for Lakeside.”

Mitchell defends his Sunparks Open title in Belgium next weekend.
