STRIKER Callum Wilson said he had been right to trust his instincts after handing Cherries a famous League Cup victory over West Brom.

The second-half substitute drilled home the winner with three minutes remaining, despite the acute angle and the support of Yann Kermorgant in a central position.

Wilson’s goal, his sixth in five games, earned Eddie Howe’s men a place in the quarter-finals for the first time in the club’s history.

Discussing his effort, Wilson told the Daily Echo: “It was late in the game so legs were getting tired but I had come on fresh so it worked out well for me.

“I got into a position which you relish as a striker. I pulled the trigger and hoped for the best.

“Some of the boys have given me stick because they say I never square the ball but as a striker in those situations, why pass the ball across and risk it getting cut out when I can do exactly what they are going to do?”

Wilson added: “Sometimes you can show Premier League teams a bit too much respect but we played the way we wanted to play. We made 10 changes and the boys that came in did fantastically.

“I don’t think you could pick a man of the match as all the boys were great. The club has not been to the quarter-finals before so it’s nice to be part of the squad that’s there and, hopefully, we can make even more history.”
