BOSS Tom Killick has saluted Poole Town’s youngsters for passing their way to an FA Youth Cup first round proper date with ex-Football League club Torquay United.

Dolphins claimed the scalp of their counterparts from Conference club Woking with a 2-0 victory at Tatnam thanks to an own goal from Cards defender Dan Bedford and Dan Munday’s injury-time strike.

Poole were forced to weather an early storm but gradually grew into the game with captain Billy Lowes taking control, dominating proceedings from central midfield.

Jack Dickson set up the opener with a swirling cross that the retreating Bedford could only head past Woking stopper Alex Harris before Munday spurned a big chance to double the lead before half-time.

Dolphins took control during the second half but struggled to find the killer second against their tired-looking visitors who were reduced to 10 men when, having made all three substitutions, Harris was withdrawn through injury with 15 minutes to play.

But Poole finally sealed their passage when Lowes embarked on a mesmeric 50-yard run before selflessly setting up Munday to lash into the roof of the net two minutes into added time.

Proud manager Killick was quick to highlight the manner in which the hosts had stayed patient and won without resorting to a more direct approach, despite their shaky start.

He told the Daily Echo: “Whoever you come up against is an unknown quantity and while we didn’t know what Woking would throw at us, we did expect a bigger test than in the previous rounds.

“They put us under a lot of pressure during the first 10 minutes and I thought we were going to have our work cut out to stay with them but after that we controlled the game.

“Even allowing for the fact that they played the last 15 minutes with 10 men, they already looked a well beaten side because of how accomplished and technically good we were.

“To be honest, there is quite a marked difference in this team’s mentality and how they’re looking to play compared with the first team.

“In the Southern League, when you’re put under a bit of pressure you tend to go longer earlier. These youngsters are brave, they want to retain it and keep playing and it’s very good to see.”

Poole will play host for a fourth time when they welcome Torquay with the fixture due to take place at Tatnam on Thursday, November 6 (7.30pm).

Dolphins: Jackson, White, Coombs, Hanratty, Gibbs, Helyar, Goddard (Glatzel, 90), Lowes, Munday, Turner, Dickson. Unused subs: North, Sharp, Crane, Williams.
