NEWLY-crowned British Open champion Scott Mitchell believes his success in front of the cameras will provide the perfect preparation for his world title tilt.

The in-form Dorset star won through eight rounds before thumping Welshman Martin Phillips 6-1 in the final, landing six of just nine shots at doubles in yesterday's decider.

Eurosport broadcast the final three stages of the tournament played out at the iconic Spa Theatre in Bridlington with Mitchell happy to perform well under the media spotlight.

He told the Daily Echo: “It’s a bigger stage than Lakeside, it’s very open and you do feel quite vulnerable up there in a lot of space with a hostile northern crowd who don’t want to see the southern softie do well.

“To hold my nerve and play like that on television can only help ahead of Lakeside and it’s a real confidence booster.”

There was no time for Mitchell to return home before jetting off to represent England in the Europe Cup in Romania.

Glen Durrant, Scott Waites and James Wilson make up the international team’s quartet with the first competition kicking off on Wednesday when Mitchell teams up with Waites.

Mitchell added: “I’m looking forward to representing Dorset and England at a major international event. It's another thing ticked off my bucket list and I can’t wait to get underway.

“I am the new guy, the inexperienced one of the team having never played in such an event before but I'm in good form and playing with confidence so hopefully that will show.”

Mitchell’s British Open success came a week after winning the England Matchplay, a tournament which marked daughter Katie’s first Open competition.

Katie, 20, beat former England internationals Apylee Jones and Sue Gulliver before bowing out in the last eight against Brenda Dyer.
