“Do I not like that...”

Cherries boss Eddie Howe could have been forgiven for uttering the phrase following this ill-deserved defeat.

Opposite number Stuart Pearce was England captain when Graham Taylor said it during a Channel 4 documentary in 1993. Pearce, who missed the controversial defeat by Holland in a World Cup qualifier, led Forest tonight as they claimed a smash-and-grab victory at Dean Court.

Having taken the lead through Callum Wilson and looked on course to rack up a third Championship win of the season, Cherries were left crestfallen as Forest stole the points.

Forest, under the cosh for long periods, netted through Britt Assombalonga and Matty Fryatt to deal Cherries an unjust reverse.

Adam Smith and Junior Stanislas were both drafted in as boss Eddie Howe made two changes to the Cherries starting line-up.

Smith replaced Simon Francis, who was ruled out due to a slight hamstring strain, while Stanislas came in for Marc Pugh, who was named on the bench.

Although chances were at a premium during a cagey start, a tentative opening was merely a prelude to a Cherries-dominated first half.

Howe’s team created a wave of attacks, fashioned a host of goalscoring opportunities and penned the visitors inside their own half for long periods.

A corner count of 11-1 told its own story, as did 10 shots for Cherries and one for Forest, with four of the hosts’ on target, while Lee Camp could have been excused for putting up a shooting stick.

The same, however, could not be said for Camp’s opposite number Karl Darlow, who stood firm behind an overworked defence to keep Cherries at bay.

Darlow’s busy shift started when he blocked a low drive from Smith after the defender, lively throughout the first half, had let fly from a tight angle following a surging run down the right.

Eunan O’Kane fired straight down the Forest stopper’s throat after taking aim from 25 yards following a short corner involving Matt Ritchie and Charlie Daniels.

Ritchie went close to breaking the deadlock when his inswinging free-kick from the right flank came back off the inside of the post with Darlow well beaten.

And after Harry Arter had seized on the loose ball and tried his luck with a rasping drive, his piledriver was charged down by a defender.

Forest were carved open by a slick move which saw Callum Wilson put Ritchie through but the winger, on his weaker right foot, was denied by Darlow’s save.

As the hosts continued to lay siege to the Forest goal, Arter lifted a shot over the crossbar from Cherries’ ninth corner which came in the 26th minute.

Forest finally managed to fashion an opening six minutes before the interval but Britt Assombalonga’s glancing header sailed well wide.

Normal service was quickly resumed when Cherries mounted another attack with Smith thwarted by Darlow at his near post after he had latched on to Wilson’s assist.

Cherries finally scored the goal their rampant play had deserved, the breakthrough coming 13 minutes into the second half.

It owed much to the tenacity of Smith who managed to keep possession on the right flank despite having two Forest players breathing down his neck.

Smith’s persistence led to the ball eventually finding Ritchie with his whipped cross into the danger area causing mayhem.

And a frantic scramble, involving Wilson and Kermorgant, ended with the former Coventry man finishing from close range to register his third goal of the season.

The lead was short-lived, however, as Forest levelled when Assombalonga climbed at the far post to head home Andy Reid’s disputed free-kick after 67 minutes.

Cherries were rocked when Forest took the lead five minutes later, Fryatt clambering over Smith to nod Jack Hunt’s cross into the back of the net.

Pugh, on as a 76th-minute substitute, saw his goalbound effort deflected for a corner before Camp pouched Reid’s grass-cutter.

Cherries: Camp, Smith, Cook, Elphick, Daniels, Stanislas (Pugh, 76), O’Kane, Arter (Rantie, 80), Ritchie (Fraser, 76), Kermorgant, Wilson.

Unused subs: Gosling, Harte, Cargill, Flahavan (g/k).

Booked: Ritchie, Cook.

Forest: Darlow, Lichaj, Hobbs, Mancienne, Fox (Hunt, h-t), Cohen, Burke, Reid (McLaughlin, 90), Antonio (Osborn, h-t), Fryatt, Assombalonga.

Unused subs: Harding, Paterson, Veldwijk, de Vries (g/k).

Booked: Fox, Hunt, Fryatt.

Referee: Kevin Friend (Leicestershire).

Attendance: 10,768 (including 1,340 away supporters).

A defeat last Saturday may have been more palatable alas proof (if was needed) that you play below your potential and win and you play well and lose. Just pick up the pieces and move on the season is a marathon and not a sprint. Come on you reds you played well and deserved the three points.

How harsh was that???? Amazing football especially first half but 2 questions. Why was kermit playing so deep and again my same question from Saturday. Why take Ritchie off when he's on fire and giving them hell to the point Pearce took fox off as he couldn't cope. Great performance though and can't wait for the next one.

Outstanding!!! and lost!! It's early days, but Yann doesn't look like the player of last season so far, should of had one shot in particular, but chose a strange pass. Wilson scored a tap in, but so far from seeing the two home games, he's work in progress. I'm not going to judge him, I'm sure he'll come good, but he seems to be struggling. We just appeared to manufacture our own demise basically, but it's not the end of the world, we move on to the next game!! UTCIAD

Great football that deserved more but it shows you gotta take your chances and we really gotta start doing something from corners. We had enough of them but none of them looked like producing a goal! We'll win more than we lose though

Agreed, our team can stand tall knowing they were robbed. What a fabulous first half, but we must have an end product or tonight will be the story of our season. Junior and Wilson obviously like playing together, Adam Smith tried hard to claim the right back position and Elphrick was solid. Lots to be positive again.

no one saw this coming, however my prediction post game was there would be no clean sheet tonight. we played extremely well and should take this positive away with us, we lost over a twenty minute period , the season is very long and im sure the opposition will be afraid of our performance tonight. I fear for Yann, his shift, against Southampton, Brentford and Forest have not been the best, I fear a percentage of him has gone without Grabbs.

They were completely outplayed by our lads and scored from their only two chances. If this had been a boxing match, the ref would have stopped the fight, they were getting so battered.
Still, that's football, we learn and move on.

What a performance for 20 minutes feel better tonight than Saturday and know that not many teams will be able to live with us, sometimes it just doesn't run for you next time we play like that we'll be 4 up at halftime !

I agree with the above comments, the first half was sublime football from AFC and a goal would have been a very fair reward for our dominant display. Two goals would have been even better. Their first goal was an own goal by O'Kane who otherwise put in a faultless performance, their second was poor defending from us with no one on the goal line to stop the header. We should have won easily as we were superb but they never gave up and sheer grit won them the day. Pity, because I think that we deserved it more...

Agree about the corners, 17 last night and not one goal from them (!!!), this obviously needs some work.
Apart from that fantastic performance from all, Smithy looks to have found himself again which is great news and credit to TK for dragging their defence around and looking a handful, maybe if he had 5mins more that would have created the opening we craved. If nothing else we know we can play football and the rest of the league are learning it too!
Well done boys it was a pleasure to watch.

We need to be a bit less elaborate and a bit more clinical and we'll be fine.

That was daylight robbery / evening robbery anyway.
So one sided it was untrue how can we dominate a team for so long and not win the game ?
Answer, we did not convert our chances, it happens in football.

We are bigger than this we will get up stand up and go again because Eddy will sort them out and cure this little blemish because nobody has the divine right to win every game no matter how well you play.

With respect we can’t keep going out and buying just because we lost a game. I’m sure we have more than enough quality in the squad now to at least carry on to the January window and then see what our needs are. Tactics/strategy, positioning and set plays(!!!) may need tweaking but a bigger squad is probably not the solution. I think we have the players so let’s just use them to their full potential.

Read some Yann comments on here and don’t see why he can’t pair with Callum as well as he did with Grabbs, if he’s not playing quite the same role as he was last term change it. Also Wilson looks good to me pace strength and skill, still convinced he’ll be up there with the Championship top scorers this season.

Finally how does Eunan O Kane at 5ft7in manage to out-jump, out-muscle and out-skill some of the steriodal giants in the is league? Well done young sir!

But unfortunately goals win games we was mugged for sure, again the same as last season we are creating a hat full of good chances and failed to put them away. Callum looks to be improving every game and I agree with other posters that Yann doesn't look as effective in the deeper role. On the whole a strong performance just need to take our chances better. I can't see us not being in the top half this season on that performance and with better finishing playoffs for sure.

It sounds like I missed one of the great games at DC. The thing is we have more of these games to come. Playing with possession for ninety minutes but next time we will have learned that there are no givens... We will take our chances and we are due to return there so we have a chance to put the result right.

We have shown that we have little to fear. There is a maturity with our fan-base. We are educated in the game and enjoy supporting the side and welcome good football at DC. So it's good that we can congratulate a side that taught us the need to bury chances and we know that next time we will still be up for it! I can't wait for the return match. NOW FOR THE BIG ONE the League Cup!

Please don't ask me to accept a loss next week to concentrate on the league. OUR SIDE CAN HAVE BOTH! ( We have the depth in the squad and the desire from the bench to impress)...

there is no doubt we were mugged, and did not deserve to lose, but Eddie cannot be happy with a defence that conceded two headed goals, and conceded a silly free kick for the first one, we have the ability to outplay most of the teams in the championship but sometimes as on Saturday you have to the ugly things
The first goal was an own goal by Eunan O'Kane who headed it in as Camp was about to catch it and the second Adam Smith was out muscled by Fryatt at the far post , I don't think Francis would of been beaten as easily. Agree bad free kick to give away. Brilliant first half display , should of been out of sight by half time. It's all a learning curve. UTCIAD
Yes, I can't understand why the first Forest goal was credited to their striker. It was most definitely an OG by O'Kane. We had an amazing first half when we should have had a deserved lead, but I feel that when we're losing, we don't have a plan B. The team just kept trying to pass, pass, pass and get the ball out wide to the wingers, when perhaps we should occasionally mix it up with a few balls up front early and don't be so scared to have a shot from distance sometimes.

I'm glad others saw the own goal, I was getting worried, as it was clearly Eunan who headed it in.

A lot of credit has to go to the Forest Goalkeeper, who I believe was the real Man of the Match.

Marc is a very fine footballer...

We did so well to win his signature from Hereford. he has not failed us, he is not high -profile, lives a clean-living life and is not greedy.

We will I am sure have much to thank him for this season. I am new to this type of spite but believe that your misspelling of Marc Pugh silly and antagonistic.

I am sure other people on this site have probably ignored your comment.
I can't understand why you would liken one of our player s to vomit? It makes me spew...

Well said St Albs!!

HK you really should try not being such an @rse-h0le, Pugh's opportunity was in no way a sitter and he has served the Cherries well for many seasons now, show some respect or go and spend your time on the Saints Echo!
