DAN Gosling knows he may have to wait for his Championship chance with Cherries but insists he will be ready when called upon by boss Eddie Howe.

Gosling, Howe’s first summer signing, was restricted to a brief substitute appearance as Cherries opened their campaign with a resounding 4-0 win at Huddersfield six days ago.

The midfielder, one of 11 changes for the League Cup first round clash at Exeter on Tuesday, marked his full debut for the club by netting the second goal in a 2-0 victory.

Gosling, who penned a four-year deal with Cherries, made 46 appearances in the Premier League for Everton and Newcastle and played 14 times in the Championship during a loan spell at Blackpool last season.

He is again expected to feature in Howe’s matchday squad when Cherries open their Dean Court campaign against newly-promoted Brentford tomorrow (3pm).

Gosling told the Daily Echo: “I am used to competition for places and had it at both Everton and Newcastle. It is no different here because there are top players in the squad.

“They had a great season last season, which shows, so it is going to be difficult to get in the team. But everyone has to be ready to play and, hopefully, I will get the nod soon.

“We got off to a flying start at Huddersfield and want to keep it going against Brentford. Hopefully, we can do that.

“All the lads are top-drawer. They are very good people on and off the pitch and there is great quality within the squad.

“Nobody who started at Huddersfield started against Exeter and to be able to field two different teams shows the strength in depth and that is only going to bode well for us this season.

“Everyone wants to win whether you are on the bench or starting. We are all in it together and we are going to need everyone this season.

“There are 46 league games, cup runs, injuries and suspensions so we will need everyone pulling in the right direction.”

Devonian Gosling became the first Cherries player to score an away goal in the League Cup for the club since 2004 when he added to Scot Bennett’s own goal at Exeter.

Gosling joked: “I’m on a striker’s ratio – I’ve got one in one at the moment so I’m happy with that!”

He added: “It was a good result and a clean sheet. These ties are never easy so to win without conceding was great.

“We were by far the better team in the first half. We created numerous chances and could have been three or four up.

“They had a 15 to 20-minute spell in the second half but we managed to get the second goal and that killed the game.”
