ROB Honeywell emerged the comfortable winner of the Bournemouth Open men’s singles following a 21-11 victory over Jake Willgress at Southbourne Bowls Club.

Honeywell, who thrashed West Moors’ John Riddington 21-7 in the semis, was 7-6 down to the Norfolk bowler after eight ends in the final.

However, the Kings competitor then hit a golden spell and |closed the match down with three shots, securing a cheque for £1,500.

There was also heartbreak for Willgress in the pairs final, where he partnered Max Harrison (Downham Market).

The duo took on Trevor Lee (Long Eaton Town) and Adrian Burbridge (Worcester), with the Midlands pair grabbing a 23-14 win.

However, there was consolation for the Willgress clan in the triples final.

Wayne Willgress, along with fellow Norfolk bowlers John and Michael Tufts, took the Ivor Challenge Bowl and prizemoney of £300 after edging a 16-14 victory over Carlisle opponents Rick Gallagher, Mark Nanson and Steve Delucchi.

He even had the added luxury |of not having to bowl his last wood.

Further success followed for Burbridge who, with partner Caroline Richardson (Dalbeattie), added the mixed pairs title to |his earlier success in the men’s pairs.

Their opponents, Denise Newport and Bob Doddington (Iver Heath), were well in touch in the early stages and actually led 13-9 after 13 ends.

However, Burbridge and Richardson finished the stronger to win 19-12 and claim the James King Challenge Vase.

The ladies’ tournament took place at Moordown Bowls Club and featured many local bowlers in the final stages.

However, the star performer turned out to be 18-year-old Anna Chalk from Mumford Norfolk.

She had a humdinger of a final with Atherley’s Joan Penfold.

Chalk had established a 20-16 lead, but Penfold fought back to level at 20-20.

In sudden death, the Norfolk teenager held her nerve to pick up one shot and take the title.

There was an equally close encounter in the pairs final, where Redhill Park duo Jenny Cooper and Pat Horgan faced Trudi McCubbin and her 11-year-old daughter Elly (Auchencairn).

This match also went to the wire, with Cooper and Horgan triumphing after picking up |two shots on the last end to win 21-19.

In the triples final, defending champions Caroline Richardson (Dalbeattie) and Sylvia Postill (Richmond Park) were joined by Sue Dillon (Richmond Park).

Their opponents were Caroline Wilson (Poole Park), Sharon Davies (West Moors) and Val Goodwin (Redhill Park).

Wilson, Davies and Goodwin were always in control and ran out 22-15 victors.
