SWIM Bournemouth’s Jay Lelliott set a new personal best as he qualified for the 1500m freestyle final at the Commonwealth Games.
The 19-year-old finished fourth in heat two behind Wales’ Dan Jervis (15:06.60), Australia’s Mack Horton (15:08.43) and England’s Dan Fogg (15:10.88) at Tollcross International Swimming Centre.
After a nervous wait through heat three – the second seeded heat - Lelliott’s time of 15:11.89 was enough to see him qualify eighth-fastest for tomorrow night’s final on his international debut.
The eventual top three controlled matters from the outset but Lelliott was always close and even briefly held third before the kilometre mark.
Although the Dorchester-born flyer slipped back a place, his terrific PB was enough to secure progress.
