AFC Bournemouth: Friendly defeat was useful exercise for boss Eddie Howe

MANAGER Eddie Howe described as “a useful exercise” Cherries’ pre-season friendly against Southampton tonight.

Howe’s team were beaten for the first time during their warm-up campaign when Lloyd Isgrove netted the only goal in the first half.

Boss Howe again stepped up game time for a number of his squad with Dan Gosling and Eunan O’Kane replaced after 81 minutes while skipper Tommy Elphick became the first outfield player during pre-season to play 90 minutes.

Howe told the Daily Echo: “I thought it was a good game between two good sides. Our players looked a little leggy which I expected with the work we have done this week. We worked them very hard in preparation for this game and knew they would go into it slightly tired. But with the games we have coming up, we felt this would be our last week to get some fitness work into them.

“I was disappointed with some aspects of our play and pleased with other aspects so we have a bit of work to do but none of that surprises us.

“I think the lads look reasonably fit. We have a couple on the treatment table who we would like to get back. They are only minor injuries so we are confident they will be back sooner rather than later and I think that will make us look a lot stronger.

“You give players a platform and an opportunity to play and then the rest is up to them. With every game, you find out things and that is what I felt we did tonight. It was a useful exercise for us. We found out quite a bit about our team and what we need to improve on.”

Howe confirmed midfielder Shaun MacDonald had sat out due to a minor hip problem and said striker Tokelo Rantie would return to training on Monday. Yann Kermorgant had treatment after the game having taken a heavy blow to ankle during the first half.

Meanwhile, discussing goalkeeper Lee Camp’s continued absence, Howe said: “We are waiting to find out the exact extent of his injury. We don’t believe it to be a serious problem but it has niggled on for a couple of weeks longer than we had hoped. We will assess it and hopefully find out more after the weekend.”

A good effort from Brett Pitman although it was disallowed. . . . . It was a comfortable win for the Saints as they were slicker than us in most departments. . . . . STILL, we were playing the cream of the bottom half of The Premiership.

I was getting plenty of fairly good natured stick last night from some saints mates.

Then it flashed up on sports news that their Chambers kid is off to Arsenal.

That sent them a bit mental.

Let's be honest about this, most of their team from last season has been sold, or is on the verge of being sold. That said, it wasn't about them, but us, and I felt we never got out passing game going, we gave the ball away too easily at times, and too often, but we did play some good football in spells, but thought we looked toothless up front, although we know that's not the case. Was really pleased with Buchel, and Baily Cargill looked totally at home when he came on. It was also good to see Matthews and Whitfield get out there. But it's a friendly, not a play off final, we got what we deserved out of the game, we go again Tuesday... UTCIAD

Can't agree with you on that mate. Our season starts very soon and E and J need to sort a few things out. Wilson was isolated too often, Kermorgant was too deep and the first touch of McQuoid was poor. Gosling huffed and puffed but didn't impress. SFC worked hard to close us down, something we didn't do. Stanislas looks good though as does Cargill. Can't wait for the season to start now though. UTCIAD

Yep we can say " only " a friendly but did feel a little worried post match, thought our passing wasn't working , there was two crosses that came in to a very score able position and both times nobody there!
But again if Eddie said he is happy and it just needs some fine tuning then it was a good exercise !

Buchel was terrific and if Camp is not ready for the start of the season, we can be calm knowing we have a young hungry keeper pushing for a first team place! Wilson, Gosling looked good, McQuoid not good enough, he just doesn't offer any threat. Overall, not bad and I'm sure we will be ready for the start of another tough season.

Why do you attend friendlys then if you think that . Getting match fit and seeing how individual players perform . Bedding the new faces in with their new team mates . That's what friendlys are all about .2 or 3 players that played last night will not feature in eddies team . So don't waste your money and attend any more friendlys . When the season starts . After 5 or 6 games if eddies team play like headless chickens , then moan . Until then if you go to any more friendlys , just keep that in mind . ..

There are far more important issues at stake. For example. when are we going to address the problem we have i.e. both first choice keepers injured with llttle time to get them match fit even if they played in the next two matches!!!
.
It seems to me that people on here are not realising how serious this problem is.
.
We cannot go away from home with young Buchel in goal in the Championship and expect to get any kind of result.
.
Any update on Flahaven ?

although it was a pre seaon match the season is only less than 2 weeks away, after reading Eddies comments I cannot help fell that he is talking like a top manager full of confusing nonsense, I understand when you are traing you work hard but when a match is coming up why would you send a team out that is leggy and obviously not match fit, and with regarde to Lee Camp he has sat all of pre season so far to protect him and we still do not know how bad the injury is, I am soory Eddie I will back you on most things but you need to show a little more urgency on some matters

Dodgy Daryl is very harsh, I think that we have been very blessed over the years with keepers and we all expect an extremely high standard so considering the divisions we have spent most of our time in we have been very lucky, I am of the understanding that Flahaven offers a lot on the training ground and with the younger keepers too

Tongue cheek nickname me and the guys who sit round us have for him but if you're going get all high and mighty about it how about the people who constantly slag rantie, pitman or mcquoid off on these pages !!!!
Again I agree with you, as for getting all high and mighty that's simply incorrect, we all have our opinions on who we think are the better players and who we think should be in the team, the abuse that Rantie in particular got on this site in my opinion was disgusting and I find it strange that fans will say these sort of things about players that pull on the Afcb shirt,

let's just hit the season running...I hope that we are good enough as more great football is promised at DC! IN Ed we trust!

It could be a lot worse look at Southampton they are now a selling club and I actually wish them luck cause I reckon they will need it!

I think Buchel is the Lichenstein goalkeeper, not the hung(a)ry one.

You obviously not seen him come for crosses then!!!
Agreed he isn't perfect, but i can't think of a keeper that we have had that hasn't had weaknesses, he certainly wouldn't be a starter but as a back up to Camp & Buchel he is ok if called upon
That's my point I would rather have buchel in goal instead of daryl.
Agreed, my issue was you calling one of our players dodgy
