AFC Bournemouth: Cherries defender Adam Smith targets game time

STARTING AIM: Adam Smith, who signed for Cherries in January

First published in Sport by

DETERMINED Cherries defender Adam Smith insists regular game time is a must as he seeks to eradicate the memory of his season on the sidelines.

The 23-year-old, a £250,000 signing from Tottenham Hotspur in January, arrived at Cherries on the back of a stop-start campaign in which his season-long loan to Derby County from Spurs was cut short in November.

Having not played league football for three months, Smith was restricted to four substitute appearances and a solitary start on the final day at Millwall.

But with his desire for Premier League football still burning, the former England under-21 international has vowed to make up for lost time by indelibly marking his name on boss Eddie Howe's team sheet.

Smith told the Daily Echo: “This is a very important season for me. I need to be playing because I’m not getting any younger and my aim is still to get into the Premier League.

“With what I have shown before, I believe I am very capable of getting there but I need a good season of pure games and that’s what I’m looking to do.

“The only way you’re going to improve is by playing and last season was really frustrating for me, I didn’t get as many games as I would have liked.

“When I went to Derby, I didn’t start straight away because I didn’t have much of a pre-season with Tottenham. It took me a good few games to get fit and then Nigel Clough got sacked.

“I made a big decision to leave Spurs and I was hoping to get in the (Cherries) team after a few weeks but Franno (Simon Francis) and the rest of the squad were doing so well so it was hard.

“I don’t really want to look back at last season too much, I have to look forward now and being settled at one club is going to help me.

“It’s nice to know where I’ll be and that’s why I chose to settle in Bournemouth. It was important to stop travelling the country and living out of the back of my car.

“Last season has been forgotten now, and everyone has to fight to hold on to their position and I will be doing everything I can to earn a place."

  • Cherries are due to take on Conference Premier side Eastleigh in their second pre-season friendly this evening (7.45pm).

The Silverlake Stadium clash will be Cherries’ first friendly on British soil in 2014-15.

A very good player but I thought it was a strange decision on his part to come to us as the only way he will play at right back is if Francis is injured or sold and he dosnt pick up injuries, will get games at left back as Daniels does pick up injuries but Harte played so well last season, nice problems for Eddie to have though!!!!

Was fantastic though when he came on at Yeovil when Harte was having a mare. Real pace.......I'd give him a run at left back and push Daniels on up the pitch with the other 7 wingers.............

I agree with eaststandman he was fantastic against Yeovil but like he says needs to have a run in the side to be at his best which is difficult with the squad we have. On another note did anyone watch the game against Poole Town were their any decent dev players looking to come through.

I agree, Daniels started as a winger at Spurs, I like Pugh but feel Charlie would give us a much more attacking threat with the way he goes past players with his pace, he would probably get a few goals too

I went down to Poole town match looked decent and coordinated 1st half 2nd half was the complete opposite.

Not sure where the comment about Daniels comes from he had quite a few knocks last season and was out for some time.

Smith was surprisingly good at Yeovil but I didnt rate him when we had him on loan before - like many modern full backs he needs to learn to actually defend before charging up the other end. Talk of playing Daniels on the wing instead of Pugh is nonsense.

Why is it nonsense, can think of plenty of examples at Afcb where players have changed positions and done very well

Think Smith could play a Mascahrenas type role , protecting the back four , winning possession and giving to the likes of RichTea , Arter etc . . Whatever we have a squad capable of variations when needed .

Why do you like slow "beat the man twice" Pugh?

St Albans Cherry says...

It's a lovely position for EH to be in and to be fair Simon Francis played out of his skin last season and his form is unlikely to dip.

So maybe the two will be used alternately, who knows?

Sounds though that he is maybe unsettled so another season out on loan would clearly not be welcome. It's a shame but that's football, he will probably sell for more than we paid?

Of course should Simon not turn up at the races( Surely he will ) then who knows Adam might end the year as our player of the season? Funny old game.

...then again aren't there some other players due to be sold off soon? Pitman and Rantie (bless them) can't have another season on the bench right?

Up the Cherries!

My turn is it, for those of us that have watched Pugh since he signed will all probably agree that he can blow hot & cold and can sometimes be frustrating but he never hides or gives up and he has more than shown that he is a good player and always chips in with a few goals, if I had of said I didn't like Pugh you would of said he was our best player, you are very entertaining though with your comments, well we all laugh at you anyway!!!!
