Poole Pirates: Brendan Johnson hopeful of Elite League berth after Wimborne Road practice skid

BRENDAN Johnson retains hope that his Elite League call will come and admits he would love nothing more than to race for Pirates.

The Poole-based 22-year-old had a practice skid at Wimborne Road after Pirates’ Elite League win over Wolves on Wednesday.

Currently racing for Mildenhall in the National League, Johnson is on the fast track list so could potentially be picked up by an Elite League club this season.

However, to date in 2014 he has found himself limited to just one top flight guest booking, when he failed to score for Belle Vue at Swindon in May.

Johnson, who five years ago came out of a coma following an accident, told the Daily Echo: “It always has been my dream to ride for Poole. I’ve been training harder than I ever have done this season as I really want to have a go at reaching the Elite League.

“It has taken a lot for me to come back from my accident mentally and physically, but this year I’ve hit the ground running and put two-and-a-half points on my average.

“I’ve really knuckled down because reaching the top level is what I want and I know I can achieve it if I keep going. I just need to keep putting myself in the shop window.

“At Mildenhall I’ve got a higher average than Josh Bates, who is riding in the Elite League and the Premier League, so I’m doing my job and now I just have to wait for the phone call.”

Meanwhile, Pirates duo Darcy Ward and Josh Grajczonek have been named in Australia’s Speedway World Cup squad.

The Aussies begin their campaign against Great Britain, the United States and an additional qualifier at King’s Lynn on July 26.
