AFC Bournemouth: Yeovil Town boss Gary Johnson admits interest in Cherries midfielder Shaun MacDonald

Bournemouth Echo: YEOVIL INTEREST: AFC Bournemouth midfielder Shaun MacDonald YEOVIL INTEREST: AFC Bournemouth midfielder Shaun MacDonald

YEOVIL Town manager Gary Johnson admits he is tracking the progress of Cherries midfielder Shaun MacDonald in the hope of securing a loan deal.

The Glovers boss revealed that he had yet to explore the possibility with the Dean Court outfit but told the Western Daily Gazette that he would be “in the queue” for the Welshman's services should he become available.

MacDonald, 26, started eight of Cherries' opening nine Championship matches last season but struggled to regain his place following a month-long spell on the sidelines with a knee injury picked up last September.

In-form trio Harry Arter, Eunan O'Kane and loanee Andrew Surman went on to command regular starting slots and the former Wales under-21 captain was limited to seven substitute appearances from the turn of the year, four of which came in the final five minutes of matches.

The ex-Swansea City man enjoyed five separate loan spells with Yeovil prior to his permanent move to Cherries for £125,000 in August 2011.

Discussing his future in an interview with the Daily Echo last month, MacDonald said: “It (pre-season) is a fresh start for me. I need to get back, work hard and try to impress again.

“At the moment, I'm trying not to think too far ahead. I don't want to put too much pressure on myself, I just want to come back, enjoy it and play my natural game so I can go into the season fresh and ready.

“For me, it's a case of getting some good work under my belt and taking it from there. My focus is to get into the team and start games after pre-season.”

I for one would be incredibly disappointed if he left, even on loan. A very good player and I'm sure he has a big part to play within the squad this season.

How strange... Before other people say otherwise I would like to back Shaun and also hope that he stays and can burst into the first team. He has strength and character and does have a certain edge to him. A man that if given his head could probably run like Pele and score like Messi!

Why strange? well so far that the opinion shared on here is unanimous! Stay Shaun and put in a season for us and you might never know...

Felt sorry for him when he got injured. Players must know how hard it is to get back in this team with the talent we have at the moment.

I also remember how the Yeovil players hacked him to pieces when we visited a couple of years ago (I recall it was a new years eve) which in a perverse sort of way shows how they rate him. Either that or they were peeved he chose to come to sunny bournemouth rather than make a permanent switch to Yeovil !

A player who needs, this season, to prove he has fully recovered from his injury and has as good a chance as any of making the first team with a good pre-season. A hard working team player who can do a job when called on. Worth holding onto, imo, in case of injuries at least.

A player who is needed by our club. A hard working player who gives his all to the cause. For any team to do well in the league, you need a good squad. You need players to come in and do a job for you when you need them to.

Shaun has to stay.

I feel he is Championship quality but he needs games to get back to his best.

I am not sure that it would be a bad thing to get match practice at Yeovil.

Definitely need to keep him as he is a superb squad member and just needs games and I am sure that he will command a place.

A short loan spell makes sense, Shaun can regain match fitness and sharpness and then come back and fight for his place in our midfield. Don't want to see him leave DC, but loan spells have their uses.

I think it's clear that his first team opportunities will be limited again this season with the midfielders we have. A loan would be good for him as at this stage in his career he really needs to be playing somewhere every week.

IMO very little to chose between eunan, Sean and harry. In terms of closing down, snapping at heels and winning ball, Sean is probably our best. He's just been unlucky to be injured at the wrong time, which enabled the other 2 to become established. I would much prefer the talk to be about Brett going out to yeovil on loan, where I believe he could score a lot of goals for them in div 1.

Well it seems that everyone on this informed web site is in agreement. It does seem a happy place DC these days! Just reading about Callum Wilson...
