A birthday cake was in order when a primary school celebrated its 50th anniversary.

St John's Primary School, in Radlett, held a tea party yesterday afternoon to celebrate the school's 50th birthday.

Old and new pupils and staff were given a tour of the school, before children from Year 2 classes performed a maypole dance organised by former teacher Karen Clout.

Guests were also treated to recorder performances from pupils, and had the opportunity to meet past and present pupils and members of staff.

Chairman of governors Jane Williams said the party felt like a family event.

She added: "Today is just about the feeling of companionship and that people really loved this school, either as a pupil, parent or member of staff. "

The school welcomed three past headteachers and a past acting head teacher, who joined current headteacher Alice Aharon.

Mrs Williams added: "We've got these past head teachers, a neighbour of the school and lots of past pupils who are now parents here today. People love the school and like to keep coming back for a visit."
