TENNIS starlet Jodie Burrage gave a good account of herself but still suffered defeat on her Wimbledon debut on Monday.

The 15-year-old, who attends Talbot Heath School, had been given a wild card into the girls’ draw at SW19.

She met Turkey’s Ipek Soylu in the first round and succumbed to a 6-4, 6-3 defeat in one hour and five minutes on Court 19.

The two players were evenly-matched across many categories but Soylu’s superior first-serve percentage proved crucial in the final reckoning.

She won 83 per cent of points on her first serve while Burrage could only win points on just over half her first serves.

The result came less than a fortnight after Burrage secured a sensational win over 2013 Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli.

The Surrey resident met the former world number seven - who retired in August last year - at the Liverpool Hope University Tennis Tournament.

It was Bartoli’s first match on British grass since her Wimbledon triumph and she trailed Burrage 4-0 in the first set at Liverpool Cricket Club.

Although the 29-year-old pulled it back to 4-4, Burrage closed out the first set 7-5.

The score was delicately poised at 3-2 in the second set when Bartoli pulled out with a shoulder problem, handing Burrage the win.
