SCOTT Mitchell may have tasted some sweet successes at the BDO International Open but felt the bite of old adversary Martin ‘Wolfie’ Adams in the semi-final.

‘Scotty Dog’ sailed through the opening rounds against Philip Say (4-0) and Andrew Hughes (4-1) at Brean Sands before a four-leg whitewash of Dorset compatriot Nigel Lamb in the last-32.

Doubles partner Richie George – son of darts legend Bobby – was next on the Bransgore-based star’s hit list (4-1) before Mitchell gained revenge on Warwickshire’s Jamie Hughes (4-2) for a defeat in the Scottish Open back in February.

But with a place in the final up for grabs, Adams dished out his own retribution for Mitchell’s three-set success in their last meeting, which left Dorset’s England international pondering another close shave.

“You could tell Martin was really up for it,” said Mitchell. “It was a strange match because I missed darts at doubles in the third and fifth legs and was stood there in the seventh thinking ‘I could be 4-2 up here’.

“I fancied my chances having got down to the doubles so it felt like another one that got away. That’s what happens at this level though, you miss and you get punished.

“Overall I was pleased with my performance, I had a good run and the improved ranking points keep me up there. It was nice to get one over on my doubles partner and quite important to beat Jamie Hughes.

“I feel I am home and dry for Lakeside but the higher I can finish, the kinder the draw should be so it is important to keep plugging away and maintain my form.”
