AFC Bournemouth: Cherries boss Eddie Howe felt Lewis Grabban exit was inevitable

Bournemouth Echo: BOSS: Eddie Howe BOSS: Eddie Howe

EDDIE Howe revealed he had always expected striker Lewis Grabban to leave Dean Court this summer after the striker departed for Norwich City.

A £300,000 signing from Rotherham in summer 2012, Cherries’ top scorer in 2013/14 signed a three-and-a-half-year deal in January which contained a release exit clause - believed to be £3million.

The Dean Court side agreed a fee with Cardiff three weeks ago but Norwich then swooped to secure the services of the frontman for Cherries’ highest-ever selling fee.

Howe told the Cherries website: "We've been aware that there has been a lot of interest in Grabbs and with the clause in his contract we were aware that we were going to lose him at some point this summer.

"It is a huge amount of money, especially when you take into account the investment that was made in Grabbs just two years ago.

"It is a club record and now it's up to us to try and make sure the team continues to move forward.

"He goes with our best wishes for the service he has given us in the two years he has been here."

Howe admitted Cherries faced a “challenge” to compete in the transfer market against the Championship’s more wealthy clubs, but insisted he remained confident of success.

He said: "Clubs coming down from the Premier League and the bigger clubs in the Championship can pay their players a lot more than we can, and when they can treble or quadruple their money elsewhere it is hard for us to compete; but that's the challenge facing us going forward.

"I think what we have to do is make sure that we continue to work very smart, develop our players as best we can and make sure we are as astute as we can be in the transfer market.

"They're things that you have to do whether you are in League Two, League One, the Championship or the Premier League and I think you can be successful wherever you are if your work is good enough."

As one door closes another opens . It will be interesting to see how the squad shapes up for the beginning of the season . Expect to see quite a few ins and outs , quality ins as Eddie will be going for it this time round .

Well that's the only thing groves did well . All the best to grabbs . We will miss him big time , not just his goals , but his work rate was next to none ...

Last time we had dealings with Norwich City, was a disater for the club .
They took our manager (John Bond) and half the team.
Eddie Howe is a srewed manager,As long as he is at AFCB ,We will be okay,
When he leaves ,which he will eventualy .Thats the time to worry for the club .
So lets enjoy the ride ,as long as it lasts ,
I dont blame Grabbon,He has his long term future to think about,He did us proud ,So we thank him for that ,And we got £3 million for him ,

Groves may have brought him in but it was EH and Tindall who gave him the tuition to be a quality player. He's now gone, never mind there are plenty of good players out there, hungry for a chance and talented enough to be a star in our team.

I've never had any problem with a player wanting to leave and improve themselves. Lewis at all times has handled himself with great professionalism. I wish him all the best for the future.

Grabban scored some important goals and worked hard at times but obviously has Wes Thomas agent. Held us to ransom last season and is never satisfied. Obviously about the money and we don't need people without the team in mind see yaa. Now while we are on the subject offload Rantie he hasn't proved himself. We will still do very well this season coz money cant buy team spirit COYR UTCIAD

Well if a £2.5 million player's confidence can be undermined by a short comment by me, perhaps he's not a £2.5 million player.
In any event I'd like to see Brett back in the starting line-up; his confidence does need restoring.

why does statements from the club always seem like a glass half full situation, suggesting one thing and delivering something else, whilst appreciating they are never going to be open about transfer dealings there are times when they need to be more open so that fans can understand why things are done a certain way
